Lakota 5

The Lakota five will return to New York City to finally do what they started out to do last year – run in the New York City Marathon. Last year when they turned their focus to helping with relief efforts after Hurricane Sandy cancelled the marathon, it came as no surprise to those of us who are very familiar with the values and spirituality of the Lakota people. Now, we want to support them all the way as they finally get to run the race.

Before NYC Marathon will take place, there is the charity challenge portion of the Spartan Race in Vermont. ONE Spirit is one of 40 charity teams that have been invited to participate. The race, including the charity challenge, will receive live television coverage through NBC. This is the kind of publicity about Lakota youth that we want to promote. The athletes are an inspiration to the youth on the reservation. The first event of the Reservation Running Program they developed saw more than 400 runners participating.

The charity heat is 4 miles long, and part of the 13 mile Vermont Beast, which is the annual world championship of Spartan racing. The Spartan race is a grueling outdoor obstacle race that draws thousands of racers annually. Read more about the Spartan Race here

Team ONE Spirit is excited to participate in this event, which will be instrumental in raising awareness about the team and the youth they inspire and support. The opportunity and benefits of such publicity outweighs the monetary costs of travel, so the team has decided to accept the invitation to participate. If you, your group or business wish to sponsor the team's race activities directly with goods, funds or services - contact Jeri Baker atThis email address is being protected from spambots. In both races, the Lakota Five are running for the Lakota youth. Funds raised will go to help build youth centers on Pine Ridge. The focus of these centers will be meeting the needs of the youth and promoting educational success.

Join us in supporting the Lakota athletes and the Lakota youth. The time for a better future is now.

Here is how you can take part....

Running for a Cause Beyond Medals, Lakota Athletes Return to the New York Marathon

Cross-country running has deep cultural roots for many Native American nations. The National Museum of the American Indian in New York recently screened "Racing the Rez", a documentary directed by Brian Truglio that tells the story of Navajo and Hopi high school runners, and how their dedication to sport transforms their lives. An exciting, equally transformational story is unfolding for five Lakota athletes from the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in southwestern South Dakota ... READ ARTICLE
