This month we want to recognize the suppliers of our food. Mark Rillings and Rillings Produce from Pierre has been providing food to the program for years. Every month they deliver the freshest of meat and produce. During harvest, the produce from Mark’s farm gets to food distribution within 24 hours of being picked. This produce includes tomatoes, corn, cantaloupe, watermelons, cucumbers, squash, potatoes, onions, etc.
In addition to Mark, we are grateful to Feeding South Dakota (FSD) and Partnerships with Native Americans who have also greatly assisted with this venture.
In the coming months, we will add traditional foods - buffalo meat, timpsila, native breads, choke cherries, berries and local honey. More will be added as they are available. Every month you help us feed over 5000 individuals. From all over the Reservation people call when they are out of food. The President’s office sends people who are out of food to us. Your support has allowed One Spirit to meet the food needs and to march resolutely toward the goal of sustainability. Without you, we never could have dreamed of a second Food Distribution Center, the Buffalo House or the myriad of other projects that we undertake.
We hope you never forget that your fellowship has a major impact on the lives of others.
This month, food from the garden makes up most of the menu. Cucumbers, squash, cantaloupe, tomatoes, potatoes, onions, etc. Corn will be on the menu if it is ready for picking. Fresh food is necessary, for all of us and particularly for the Lakota people where diet-related disease affects every household and 50% of the people have diabetes. It is absolutely necessary that we maintain our standard of keeping processed and high sugar items out of the food program.
Thank you for being with us in this mission to end hunger and diet-related diseases on the Reservation.
